Cherundolo to undergo another knee surgery

As Steve Cherundolo's United States teammates were struggling in Honduras, the veteran right back was getting an operation on his left knee, one that could prevent him from participating in the next set of World Cup qualifiers.

Cherundolo underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday, according to Hannover 96's official website, and the club captain is slated to remain on the sidelines after already sitting out for almost the last two months.

Cherundolo has not played since a Dec. 19 DFB Pokal match against Borussia Dortmund, and he has not returned to the matchday lineup for Hannover since the Bundesliga season resumed on Jan. 18.

Timmy Chandler stepped into Cherundolo's role as starting right back Wednesday against Honduras, with the 22-year-old German-American cap-tying himself to the United States with the appearance.

Hannover offered no timetable on Cherundolo's rehabilitation and recovery period, and it is uncertain whether the 33-year-old veteran will be able to return in time for the United States' next qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico on March 22 and 26, respectively.
