Veteran Jose Contreras, 41, signs minor league deal with Pirates

The SportsXchange

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday announced that they have reached agreement on a minor league contract with right-handed pitcher Jose Contreras.

The announcement came from the team's official Twitter feed, according to NBCSports.com's HardBallTalk.com.

Contreras will be invited to spring training, which is already underway, but he may not be ready to start the 2013 regular season because he's still rehabbing from a torn UCL in his right elbow and a flexor pronator tear.

Contreras, 41, is a native of Cuba. He pitched just 13 2/3 innings of relief last season for the Philadelphia Phillies, giving up 13 hits and 10 runs (eight earned).
