Veteran CB Gamble released by Panthers

The SportsXchange

The Carolina Panthers have parted with cornerback Chris Gamble after nine seasons, the team announced Friday.

Gamble, the Panthers' first-round draft pick in 2004, was released after a 2012 season in which he was limited to four games because of a shoulder injury. Gamble was due to make $7.9 million in base salary in 2013.

His 27 career interceptions are a franchise record and he also made the most starts (117) by a cornerback in team history. Gamble also has 558 tackles, which rank third on the team's career list, and 84 passes defensed.

"I appreciate the contributions of Chris during my first two years as head coach and to the organization for many years," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. "He always handled things the right way and we wish him the best."
