Vermont 68, UMBC 53

Clancy Rugg scored a career-high 19 points to lead Vermont over Maryland-Baltimore County 68-53 Saturday in Burlington, Vt.

Rugg's points came on 6-of-8 shooting on a day in which the Catamounts (10-6) again struggled from the field early. They made 44 percent (22 of 50) from the field but hit just 3 of 13 on 3-pointers.

However, the Retrievers (3-14) shot just 36.4 percent (16 of 44) and committed 30 fouls. Brett Roseboro and Aaron Morgan fouled out.

The game would have been a bigger blowout if the Catamounts had made more than 53.8 percent (21 of 39) of their foul shots.

The Catamounts started well, scoring the first nine points, and they took a 27-21 lead into halftime.

The Retrievers kept the game close, cutting their lead to three before the Catamounts were able to pull away.

Chase Plummer scored 17 and Brian Neller 13 for UMBC.

Ethan O'Day added 12 points and Sandro Carissimo 11 for the Catamounts. Rugg also pulled down nine rebounds.
