Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander became the latest star pitcher to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic, CBS Sports reported Monday. Verlander was not on the U.S. team's roster but a spot was available for him if he wanted it. He reportedly told manager Joe Torre that he decided not to participate in the tournament. Verlander pointed to the length of his 2012 season and the number of pitches he threw as reasons for opting out. He last pitched in Game 1 of the World Series against the San Francisco Giants in October. Earlier, David Price and Clayton Kershaw withdrew from the U.S team, while Yu Darvish will not play for Japan and Felix Hernandez opted out of the Venezuelan club.
