Velvet Sky
Perhaps the most popular female wrestler in the history of TNA has been released. Velvet Sky, a former member of the legendary Beautiful People faction, has been granted her release from the promotion. This had been rumored for days, but Velvet Sky only confirmed her release today on Twitter.
Here is Velvet Sky's tweet confirming her release.
"I have been granted my release by TNA at this time. It's what's best for me right now and I wanted to thank TNA and I also want to thank Vince Russo for creating and believing in the team of The Beautiful People. We had a great run!"
The Beautiful People
Quite simply, The Beautiful People were the greatest female wrestling faction in history. They were similar to the NWO in that although they were heels, most fans loved them. At their height, The Beautiful People proved that TNA had faith in female wrestlers to give great promos, advance storylines and work in the ring.
Angelina Love
Velvet Sky is the second member of The Beautiful People to have been recently released by TNA. Angelina Love was an outstanding TNA wrestler and even gave her best to the silly gimmick of being put under a spell by Winter. With both Angelina Love and Velvet Sky out of TNA, I don't know where this leaves the Knockout division.
TNA Knockouts
Ever since Brooke Hogan took over as head of the TNA Knockouts, I feel like I'm watching Raw concerning Impact Wrestling's usage of female wrestlers. I can't directly blame Brooke because I know she is only the kayfabe leader of the Knockouts. But the loss of two legends like Velvet Sky and Angelina Love makes me wonder if the TNA Knockouts will be extinct in six months.
Velvet Sky's future
I sincerely hope the WWE gives Velvet Sky a call as quickly as possible. I know the Divas are even more under-utilized than the Knockouts. But AJ Lee is an example of how a breakout star can rise above a promotion's poor creative strategy. Velvet Sky deserves to work for the top wrestling promotion in the world.
