Despite Mexican forward Carlos Vela's best attempts, Real Sociedad's lengthy unbeaten run is over, and the club failed to come up with a victory that would have been crucial for its European aspirations. Follow GOAL.COM on Twitter
Vela, whose career-high 14 goals have accounted for nearly a quarter of Real Sociedad's season total, tallied in the fifth minute of the 2-1 loss to Getafe Monday, a loss that snapped Sociedad's 15-game unbeaten run (9-0-6) in La Liga.
The loss, Sociedad's first since a 4-3 defeat to Real Madrid on Jan. 6, also prevented the side from gaining more separation in the race for La Liga's final Champions League place, as it leads Valencia by just two points for fourth place with four games remaining in the 2012-13 campaign.
Vela provided a textbook diving header from eight yards off a cross from David Zurutuza to open the scoring. Getafe received goals from Pedro Leon and Abdel Barada before halftime to seize the lead, though, and the hosts on for the victory to keep their Europa League hopes alive. Getafe trails Malaga by six points for Spain's second Europa League berth.
For Vela, his 14 goals are eighth most in Spain's top flight.
