Mexican forward Carlos Vela and Real Sociedad are on the cusp of the UEFA Champions League group stage after a stellar road showing at French power Lyon on Tuesday.
Vela set up Antoine Griezmann for a highlight-reel opening goal, which sparked Sociedad's 2-0 away win that the Spanish side will take back home for next week's return leg.
In the 17th minute, Vela ran down the left channel to track down the ball, cutting it back toward the top of the box prior to getting to the end line. Griezmann levitated for an acrobatic, left-footed, scissor-kick volley that tucked inside the lower far corner to open the scoring.
Haris Seferovic scored five minutes after the halftime restart to provide a crucial second away goal and give Sociedad a decisive advantage heading into the home leg.
For Vela, the performance is the second in a row in which he has figured in the scoring, as he scored and assisted on a goal in Sociedad's La Liga-opening 2-0 victory over Getafe.
