RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Commonwealth won for the second time in four days, with a relentless defensive effort keying a convincing 76-44 victory over Western Kentucky.
The Rams (8-3) shut down a Hilltoppers squad that entered the night averaging more than 70 points per game. It forced 32 turnovers and held Western Kentucky (8-4) to 15-for-42 shooting (35.7 percent) in an impressive follow-up to Saturday's 73-54 victory over Alabama.
Western Kentucky took its only lead of the game 3-2 on a Kevin Kaspar 3-pointer, then saw VCU score the next 13 points to take command. The margin was 42-16 by halftime, and the Rams led by as many as 40 points late in the second half.
Briante Weber led a balanced scoring attack for VCU with 13 points. Rob Brandenberg added a dozen, Treveon Graham had 11, and Juvonte Reddic finished with 10.
George Fant led Western Kentucky with eight points. Brandon Harris had seven points, but also committed nine turnovers.
