Varsity Football Preview: Week Seven in the Public Schools Athletic League

Yahoo Contributor Network

There's a chill in the air, but the Public Schools Athletic League's varsity football season is heating up. With three weeks to go in the regular season, teams are fighting for playoff births and higher seeds in the league's Championship and Bowl Divisions. Here's a preview of some of the key games in both divisions for week seven (October 19-20).

Friday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. ET

No. 4 Port Richmond Red Raiders vs. No. 2 Tottenville Pirates

Tottenville (6-0) will lean on Syracuse-bound running back Augustus Edwards, who has rushed for 763 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Port Richmond (5-1) have won five straight games. They will counter with duel-threat quarterback Michael Goffredo, who has 725 all-purpose yards and five touchdons on the season. Last season, the Pirates defeated the Red Raiders, 26-20.

Saturday, October 20 at 12:00 p.m. ET

No. 6 Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters vs. No. 1 Erasmus Hall Dutchmen

The Railsplitters (5-1) have been running over team -- literally -- behind Antoine Holloman Jr., who has rushed for 960 yards and eight touchdowns. Erasmus (6-0) has an equally dangerous ground game led by the Kahlil Lewin and Curtis Samuel. They have a combined 1,104 yards rushing and 8 TDs. The Railsplitters defeated the Dutchmen, 20-12, in last year's championship game at Yankee Stadium.

Saturday, October 20 at 12:00 p.m. ET

No. 5 Thomas Jefferson Orange Wave vs. No. 8 New Utrecht Utes (12:00 p.m.)

Jefferson (5-1) has play-makers on both sides of the ball in Kendall Thomas (13 touchdowns) and heavily-recruited defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko (10 sacks). The Utes (4-2) have surprised the city this season behind quarterback Ryan Witherspoon, who has thrown for 676 yards and eight touchdowns. More than likely, the winner of this game will host a first-round playoff game.

Saturday, October 20 at 12:00 p.m. ET

No. 1 William E. Grady Falcons vs. No. 4 James Madison Knights

Grady (6-0) is averaging a staggering 38 point per game behind quarterback Duwan Hyman, who has thrown 12 touchdowns and Ruben Joseph (seven rushing TDs). But the stingy Knights (5-1) are allowing only 8.5 points per contest. Plus, they defeated the Falcons, 22-14, in week seven of last season.
