Vancouver lands 2015 Women's World Cup final

The SportsXchange

Vancouver will host the championship game of 2015 Women's World Cup, FIFA announced Thursday.

The tournament previously was awarded to Canada, but the site of the final match wasn't known until B.C. Place Stadium was revealed as the destination. The retractable-roof stadium features artificial turf.

The semifinal matches will be played in Montreal and Edmonton. Early-round matches will be staged in Vancouver, Montreal, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Moncton.

The Women's World Cup will expand from 16 teams to 24 for the 2015 edition, which will run June 6-July 5. Japan is the defending champion, having defeated the United States in penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw in the 2011 title game at Frankfurt, Germany.

The U.S. team won two of the first three Women's World Cup titles, in 1991 and 1999, but it hasn't captured a championship since. The Americans came in third place in both 2003 and 2007 before the runner-up finish in 2011.

Canada has never made it out of the group stage a Women's World Cup, though the rising Canadian squad pushed the U.S. team to overtime last summer in the London Olympics.
