Vancouver 2-0 Edmonton (5-2 agg.): Whitecaps cruise into Voyageurs Cup final

The Vancouver Whitecaps put in an economical performance to close out their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal series with FC Edmonton on Wednesday.

Vancouver cruised to a 2-0 victory at BC Place over a 10-man Edmonton squad that hardly looked threatening on the night. The result sees the 'Caps take the two-legged tie by a 5-2 aggregate scoreline, after they had also won last week's first leg at Commonwealth Stadium.

A Corey Hertzog strike and an own-goal by Eddies midfielder Shaun Saiko were all the offence needed to wrap things up for the Whitecaps.

After a scoreless first half in which the hosts enjoyed most of the ball, a red card to Edmonton's Adrian LeRoy in the 51st minute put the Albertan side under more pressure. It took less than 10 minutes for Vancouver to capitalize on the numbers advantage, as Hertzog unleashed a screamer from 30 yards to break the deadlock in the 58th minute.

Just nine minutes later, Edmonton put the nail in its own coffin as Saiko nodded a Russell Teibert corner into his own goal. Saiko's gaffe put an end to the scoring, as Vancouver was content to ride out the result.

Later this month, the Whitecaps will face the Montreal Impact - big winners over Toronto FC earlier in the night - in a two-legged final to determine a new Voyageurs Cup champion.
