Utah QB Wynn announces his football career is over

Jordan Wynn, who was Utah's starting quarterback in its first two games this season, has announced that he will retire from football after sustaining his fourth shoulder injury in Saturday's game against Utah State.

Wynn was forced out of Saturday's game shortly before halftime when he injured his left shoulder, and he probably will require surgery.

Wynn has had three shoulder operations -- two on his left, one on his right -- since the spring of 2010, and he missed the final nine games last season because of a shoulder injury.

He is a redshirt junior this season, so he could have returned to play next season even if he was sidelined for the remaining of this season, but he decided he's had enough.

"I can honestly walk away from the game with my head up," Wynn told reporters Tuesday. "I went out and tried as best as I could and worked hard and just in the end it's not meant to be. For whatever reason my shoulders just couldn't hold up."

Wynn has been the Utes' No. 1 quarterback since becoming the starter midway through his freshman year.

With Wynn out, Jon Hays becomes Utah's starter for the rest of the season.
