US loses to Australia 1-0 in Olympic field hockey

LONDON (AP) -- One day after upsetting Argentina at the Olympics, the U.S. women's field hockey team lost for the second time at the London Games on Thursday.

Anna Flanagan scored the lone goal from a penalty corner in the 32nd minute to give Australia a 1-0 victory over the Americans (1-2).

The 20-year-old defender's goal was her second in two days.

"We're pretty positive with how we're going," Australia captain Madonna Blyth said. "We keep improving. Hopefully we have a good game against Argentina."

U.S. midfielder Rachel Dawson, who turned 27 on Thursday, remained optimistic despite the loss.

"They're a great team, and they capitalized on their opportunities," Dawson said. "But are they loads better than us? No."

Also, Maartje Goderie scored to give the Netherlands a 1-0 victory over China. The midfielder weaved through China's defense and beat goalkeeper Zhang Yimeng in the 10th minute for her 10th international goal.

"It should have been 5 or 6-0," Netherlands coach Max Caldas said. "I'm not happy that we had so many chances and not many goals. Otherwise I'm happy."

It was a repeat performance of the final at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when Goderie scored to help the Netherlands beat China 2-0.

South Korea earned its first win of the tournament, beating Japan 1-0. Britain beat Belgium 3-0, and Germany recovered after a sluggish performance to beat South Africa 2-0.

"It feels a little disappointing at first," South African captain Marsha Marescia said. "But I think we really came out today and created many opportunities. Luck didn't go our way.

"The entire team is highly motivated. We all want to play the best we can, but if others are better, so be it."
