UNLV plans to construct a statue of former coach Jerry Tarkanian. The Las Vegas Sun reported Friday that university officials are expected to make a formal announcement next Wednesday. "We are spearheading an effort to work on a project honoring coach Tarkanian," said Jim Ratigan, executive director of the UNLV Alumni Association. "We're still working on all the details." The Sun, according to sources, reported that the statue will be on the concourse outside of the Mack, Cox Pavilion and Mendenhall Center. The statue, part of the Jerry Tarkanian Legacy Project, will also include a scholarship fund in his name. Tarkanian won 509 games in 19 seasons at UNLV, including four Final Four appearances and a national championship in 1990. The floor at the Thomas & Mack Center is already named after him. Tarkanian, 82, will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., in September.
