LONDON (AP) -- Manchester United rallied to beat Stoke 3-2 on Saturday in the English Premier League on second-half headers by Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez.

Rooney struck in the 78th minute at Old Trafford and Hernandez nodded in the winner 2 minutes later for United, which is eight points behind first-place Arsenal.

Arsenal won 2-0 at Crystal Palace, with Mikel Arteta scoring on a penalty kick before being sent off. Olivier Giroud headed in the second goal.

On the day the Football Association celebrated its 150th anniversary, Liverpool produced the most convincing victory. Luis Suarez had a hat trick in a 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion that lifted the team to second place, two points behind Arsenal.

Everton provisionally climbed to third place with a 2-0 victory at Aston Villa.

U.S. goalkeeer Tim Howard made a diving stop on Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke's penalty kick in the eighth minute. Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman scored.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Neymar scored one goal and set up Alexis Sanchez's winning chip shot in the 78th minute, carrying Barcelona past Real Madrid 2-1 in the first ''clasico'' since the defending champions added Neymar and Real signed Gareth Bale.

With Lionel Messi oddly quiet for Barcelona, Neymar opened the scoring in the 19th minute from close range after a pass from Andres Iniesta. Two minutes earlier, Neymar struck the ball into the arms of Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez with the game's first shot.

Neymar received an ovation when he was substituted with six minutes to go after a match in which the Brazilian striker clearly outshone Bale.

Neymar joined Barcelona this offseason for $76 million, a player who could represent the team's future in a distant post-Messi era. Bale, an attacking midfielder from Wales, signed with Real Madrid for a sum reported variously at $120 million and $132 million.

He failed to produce a shot on goal before being replaced by Karim Benzema with a half hour to go. Bale was limited to a pair of harmless long attempts that sailed high as Madrid failed to muster a shot on target until a minute before halftime.

Madrid is six points back amid doubts about the team under new coach Carlo Ancelotti following losses to both its league challengers. It lost 1-0 to Atletico last month.

BERLIN (AP) - Henrikh Mkhitaryan inspired Borussia Dortmund to a 3-1 win at rival Schalke in the Bundesliga, while Bayern Munich survived a scare to beat Hertha Berlin 3-2.

Mkhitaryan was involved in all of his side's goals, after the 143rd Ruhr derby was delayed due to flares causing thick yellow smoke in the Dortmund fans' stand.

As referee Knut Kircher led the teams back off the pitch, Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller appealed to the hooded supporters to desist, only to have lit flares thrown in his direction.

''They're not pretty pictures, to put it mildly,'' Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. ''You feel shame at times like this. I'm often proud of our fans but that was disruptive in the truest sense of the word. We won despite it, not because of it.''

Dortmund seized the initiative once play got underway. Mkhitaryan sent Marco Reus through to cross for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's opening score in the 14th minute.

Schalke had the chance to equalize after Neven Subotic conceded a penalty in the 30th, but Kevin-Prince Boateng failed to convert against his former club when Weidenfeller saved his spot kick.

Mkhitaryan led a counterattack to set up Nuri Sahin's 20-yard strike in the 51st, and the Armenia midfielder led another in the 74th for Jakub Blaszczykowski to seal the result, 12 minutes after the 18-year-old Schalke substitute Max Meyer pulled one back on a rebound.

League leader Bayern had to come from behind to win and stretch its unbeaten league run to 35 games, while being grateful not to concede a penalty in injury time. Hertha protested when Adrian Ramos fell under last defender David Alaba's challenge on the edge of the box.

MILAN (AP) - Jonathan, Rodrigo Palacio, Cambiasso and Rolando scored to help Inter Milan win for the first time in four games, 4-2 over promoted Hellas Verona in Serie A.

Inter forward Ishak Belfodil and Verona defender Vangelis Moras were shown red cards after the final whistle for an off-the-ball scuffle.

Inter moved provisionally six points behind leader Roma, which has won its opening eight matches and plays Udinese on Sunday.

Earlier, Sampdoria picked up its second victory of the season with a 1-0 win over 10-man Atalanta.

PARIS (AP) - Prince Oniangue scored in stoppage time to give Reims a 3-2 victory at Marseille.

Marseille's Andre-Pierre Gignac tied it late, but Oniangue was left unmarked to head home the winner. Marseille has lost three straight.

Marseille is sixth, seven points behind leader Paris Saint-Germain, which visits Saint Etienne on Sunday.
