LONDON (AP) -- The most unpredictable Premier League season in years provided more surprises Saturday when Chelsea gave up a 90th-minute winner at Stoke and beleaguered defending champion Manchester United lost to Newcastle for its second home defeat in four days.
With Manchester City held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton, Liverpool was able to capitalize. It routed West Ham 4-1 to go to second place, with Luis Suarez following his spectacular four-goal game by scoring again at Anfield.
Arsenal kept its four-point lead going into Sunday's game against Everton. Chelsea's 3-2 loss at Stoke, sealed by Oussama Assaidi's late strike, saw Jose Mourinho's club drop to third place on goal difference behind Liverpool.
United's flimsy hopes of retaining the title took another step back with a 1-0 loss to Newcastle at Old Trafford. The champions are in ninth place - 12 points behind Arsenal - and manager David Moyes is under increasing scrutiny in his first season as Alex Ferguson's successor.
Also, Sunderland stayed bottom after squandering a lead to lose 2-1 at home to sixth-place Tottenham, Crystal Palace beat Cardiff 2-0 for a third win in four matches and Norwich won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion.
There was a minute's applause before each Premier League game in honor of former South Africa president Nelson Mandela, who died Thursday at 95.
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Midfielder Arda Turan scored twice to help Atletico Madrid start its defense of the Copa del Rey title by easing to a 4-0 win at third-division Sant Andreu on Saturday.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone left strike duo Diego Costa and David Villa on the bench for the first hour of the match, opting for a starting 11 with just four regular starters and featuring youngsters Oliver Torres and Javier Manquillo. It was still more than enough to overpower Sant Andreu.
Getafe drew 1-1 at second-division Girona thanks to Ciprian Marica's bicycle kick. Later, Real Madrid and Levante visit lower-division opponents, while Athletic Bilbao plays at fellow topflight side Celta Vigo.
The return legs of the round of 32 will be played in two weeks.
Balotelli put Milan ahead seven minutes in after redirecting a cross from Kaka then scored the equalizer in the 82nd with a free kick over a Livorno wall. The striker nearly produced a winner in the 89th but his long-distance effort banged off the underside of the crossbar and bounced in front of the goal.
Milan moved into eighth place while Livorno is fifth from bottom.
BERLIN (AP) - Unbeaten Bayern Munich beat Werder Bremen 7-0 for the side's 13th win from 15 games in the Bundesliga on Saturday, while Bayer Leverkusen won 1-0 at Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern winger Franck Ribery marked his league return after recovering from a cracked rib by scoring two goals and setting up two more as the league leaders inflicted the heaviest home defeat on Bremen in the Bundesliga.
Bayern stretched its Bundesliga-record unbeaten run to 40 games.
''Today it was an honor to be a coach here,'' said Bayern's Pep Guardiola, who became the first coach in the Bundesliga not to lose any of his first 15 games.
Son Heung-min's 18th-minute strike was enough for second-place Leverkusen to consign Dortmund to a second successive league defeat at home.
Borussia Moenchengladbach defeated 10-man Schalke 2-1 to consolidate fourth place, Stuttgart beat Hannover 4-2, Augsburg won 1-0 at Hamburger SV though Raul Bobadilla's 18th-minute strike, and Hoffenheim won 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt to leave the home side 10 league games without a win.
PARIS (AP) - Paris Saint-Germain bounced back from its first loss this season by outclassing last-place Sochaux in a 5-0 win on Saturday, provisionally extending its lead to four points in the French league.
PSG captain Thiago Silva volleyed home a cross from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 14th minute before Argentine winger Ezequiel Lavezzi tapped in a short pass from Thiago Motta in the 47th.
Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani beat Sochaux goalkeeper Pierrick Cros in the 62nd for a 3-0 lead. Ibrahimovic sealed the win with a powerful free kick in the 86th and a close-range effort in stoppage time.
Marseille coach Elie Baup was dismissed Saturday after the 2010 champion lost 1-0 to Nantes the day before. Baup was replaced by sporting director Jose Anigo, who will be in charge until the winter break.
PSG had a 36-game unbeaten run snapped by a 2-0 loss to Evian on Wednesday.
