Each year, the search for a summer sports camp can leave parents in a puddle of frustration. While religious and art camps appear to be the majority, what about a unique place that allows children of any faith to play sports in the great outdoors?
Thankfully, summer of 2012 is offering a variety of new camps that promise to wow kids and make every penny worth it.
Sports camp for kids that hate sports
There is a new summer sports camp in 2012 that focuses on sports like quidditch from Harry Potter -- but the Ultimate Sports Camp is in Peterborough, Canada. For Americans, the Detroit Area also offers a Harry Potter aspect to their camp and also has sports that perk an otherwise un-athletic child's imagination.
Good examples of the programs from the new Great Lakes Sports and Adventure Camp include; "Lego Adventure, Nerf Extravaganza, Extreme Bedroom Makeover and GLSAC Olympics."
Putting some wildlife in a city kid's summer
Do your kids watch nature shows on television with stars in their eyes? If you know a child with a bit of the outdoors in their soul, they will be interested in over 8,000 acres of back country at the Extreme Outdoors Camp in Parker, Colo. If you are worried about this camp lacking athletics; put your fears aside. On the website, they state that kids walk up to three miles per day.
New summer sports camp for LGBTQ teens
Raising healthy kids is not only slanted toward their physical growth -- but also their emotional growth. Of course, a parent of a child that is queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBTQ) knows that positive friends and role models are essential. Addressing those needs is a new summer camp in Provincetown, Mass., that has more than fitness, wellness, and nutrition classes to offer.
On the Camp Lightbulb website they state, "Growing up can be tough. The sobering truth is that LGBTQ young people are up to 4 times more likely to be bullied and up to 6 times more likely to attempt suicide. Just imagine the difference a summer camp experience can make: a summer filled with friends, pride, support and memories that will last a life-time."
A summer sports adventure for special needs kids
When your child has special needs, you need a well-supervised camp where they can actually have fun. For this reason, Shining Star Camp on Lake Huron is encouraging parents to drop kids off for two weeks of summer sports. Sports programs are tailored for kids with medical equipment with an emphasis on wet and dry sports. In addition, they have a "staff-to-camper ratio of one-to-two."
New sports camp for kids post-cancer
In Jamestown, Colo., a new summer sports camp has opened that welcomes kids that have survived cancer. Are you curious about what makes a camp like this so important? In a video about Camp Courage, one young survivor says that playing with other kids that are healthy reminds her of things that she can no longer do since her battle with cancer.
According to the girl's mother, when kids return from camps like Camp Courage, "they have a renewed sense of 'I can do anything.'"
Olympic athlete starts new sports camp for girls
This year, Luge Olympiad Julia Clukey is opening a new summer sports option at Camp KV on Maranacook Lake in Readfield, N.Y. KJOnline.com states that part of the reason that kids will have a chance to work with Clukey this year is due her medical recovery. Since she will not compete with the World Cup event this winter, she is putting her focus on, "being a role model for young girls as they get to a point in their life where they start figuring out what they want to do."
If you are still having trouble finding the perfect summer sports camp for kids this year, try using the guide developed by the John Hopkins Medical Center for their staff.
