University of North Carolina junior P.J. Hairston was arrested Wednesday night for possession of marijuana, according to ABC11 News in Raleigh, N.C.
Durham police stopped the Tar Heels swingman at a checkpoint. He was also written up for driving without a license. "We are aware of the situation involving one of our athletes," UNC Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications Steve Kirschner told the TV station. "We are still gathering information and may comment further later."
Hairston averaged a team-high 14.6 points per game as a sophomore, and provided a lift when he became a starter midway through ACC play. He averaged 18.2 points during the Tar Heels' final 13 games. He considered entering the NBA draft this spring, but opted to return to the school.
It has yet to be determined how Wednesday's events will affect Hairston's status on the team.
