Ukrainian Premier League season to resume

The Ukrainian Premier League is set to resume March 15 after civil unrest in the country brought the division to a halt.

The nation's top flight had been due to restart Feb. 28 following a midseason break, but was postponed because of the deteriorating political situation in the Eastern European nation.

Shakhtar Donetsk, Dnipro and Chornomorets Odessa all hosted Europa League games last month, although Dynamo Kiev's home leg against Valencia was moved to Cyprus.

The Ukraine national team was also forced to play a home match at a neutral venue, with Mikhail Fomenko's men beating the USA 2-0 in Cyprus.

However, following a meeting between the country's clubs and Ukrainian soccer authorities, an agreement to resume the professional campaign has been reached.

"As the whole country is waiting for the matches, the championship race must restart as quickly as possible," said Ukraine's minister of youth and sport Dmitry Bulatov.

The 19th and 20th rounds of the season, which were lost to the unrest, will be rescheduled for a later date.

Defending Premier League champion Shakhtar sits on top of the table after taking 38 points from 17 games with Metalist Kharkiv, which has a game in hand, five points behind in second.
