UFL season begins in Las Vegas before 2,500

The United Football League season kicked off Wednesday night in Las Vegas with only 2,500 on hand to watch the Las Vegas Locomotives defeat the Virginia Destroyers 19-6 in a rematch of last year's championship game.

Attendance was announced at 5,277 in Sam Boyd Stadium, but the Thomas & Mack Center, operators of the 36,000-seat stadium, put the crowd at 2,500, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The UFL had no preseason and the Destroyers, coached by former NFL assistant Kurt Schottenheimer, practiced for only five days leading up to the game.

Las Vegas scored on its two first-quarter possessions, a 45-yard run by DeDe Dorsey and a 38-yard Clint Stitser field goal.

"I wasn't going into the first game with that short of practice and say we are going to have an aerial circus," Locomotives coach Jim Fassel said.
