UFC on Fox 7 Predictions

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | UFC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, will defend his belt for the third time when he squares up against the last Strikeforce 155-pound champ, Gilbert Melendez, at UFC on Fox 7. The event is set for April 20, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Here are my predictions for the entire UFC on Fox 7 fight card:

Benson Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez

Henderson (18-2-0, 8 submissions) looked good during his last outing, handing Melendez' training partner, Nate Diaz, a vicious beating at UFC on Fox 5. Melendez (21-2-0, 11 KOs) had a hard time dealing with Josh Thompson's wrestling at times during his last fight, and it's hard to see him doing any better against Benson -- who is arguably the best wrestler in the UFC's lightweight division. "Smooth" should be able to impose his will wherever the fight takes place, and secure his seventh straight win inside the Octagon.

Prediction: Henderson wins via decision.

Frank Mir vs. Daniel Cormier

Cormier (11-0-0, 5 KOs) will try to keep his undefeated record intact when he squares up against Mir (16-6-0, 9 submissions) at UFC on Fox 7. Cormier -- who'll be making his UFC debut -- is deservedly the favorite heading into their encounter, but Frank is skilled enough to pull off the upset if Daniel makes any mistakes inside the Octagon.

However, I've never seen "DC" lose his composure during a fight, so it's only rational to expect him to follow an intelligent gameplan. He shouldn't have any problems keeping the fight standing with his wrestling skills, until he finds Mir's jaw with his fists.

Prediction: Cormier wins via TKO.

Nate Diaz vs. Josh Thomson

Diaz (16-8-0, 11 submissions) will try to get back to the winning side of things when he faces Thompson (19-5-0, 9 submissions) at UFC on Fox 7. Thomson is a well-rounded veteran, but it's hard to see him getting past Nate's boxing and submissions.

Prediction: Diaz wins via decision.

Matt Brown vs. Jordan Mein

Jordan (27-8-0, 15 KOs) looked solid during his last outing against Dan Miller, but he'll have his hands full when he squares up against Brown (16-11-0, 9 KOs) at UFC on Fox 7. "The Immortal" is currently on a four-fight win-streak (with wins against Mike Swick and Stephen Thompson), and his rock-solid chin might be the difference maker against Mein.

Prediction: Brown wins via TKO.

Chad Mendes defeats Darren Elkins

Lorenz Larkin defeats Francis Carmont

Myles Jury defeats Ramsey Nijem

Joseph Benavidez defeats Darren Uyenoyama

Tim Means defeats Jorge Masvidal

T.J. Dillashaw defeats Hugo Viana
