UFC on FOX 12 Results: Bobby Green Punks Josh Thomson in His Hometown

Bobby Green and Jorge Masvidal Square Off at UFC 178 After Quick Turn from Victories

Josh Thomson squared off with Bobby Green on Saturday night to kick off the UFC on FOX 12 main card.

Thomson was fighting on his home turf, trying to get back into the title picture after failing to capture the shot when he was just one fight away in his last bout. Green was riding a seven-fight winning streak into the bout, looking for a win over Thomson to solidify his own notions for a shot at the lightweight championship.

In short, both men were hungry, looking to take the next step up in their respective careers, and the fight played out as such.

Green took control of the center of the Octagon, and dictated the pacing for most of the fight, especially in the first two rounds. Thomson, however, was the busier, more aggressive fighter, firing off strikes in combination. Green tried to shake them off and answered with numerous, if not more powerful, one-off strikes.

Neither was able to establish a clear dominance throughout the three-round fight.

Green, however, seemed to have a little more flair in the final round, scoring an early takedown, and landing several hard shots, including a flying knee that likely caught the judges’ eyes.

Thomson answered with a solid flurry, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.

The scorecards reflected a 29-28, 28-29, 29-28, split-decision victory for Green, as the hometown fans rained boos upon him.

Boobirds be damned, Green still walked out of the SAP Center on Saturday night with his eighth consecutive victory, and the one that was the most important of his career, having defeated the former Strikeforce lightweight champion.
