Coming into the fight, many saw former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as damaged goods, but he proved the doubters wrong, scoring a highlight-reel knockout over James Te Huna in the co-main event at UFC Fight Night 33 in Brisbane, Australia, on Friday night.
Shogun started on the front foot, landing a right hand on Te Huna, before throwing stinging leg kicks. As Te Huna came forward to land a shot, he was crumbled to the mat by a short left hand on the inside from Shogun.
He was knocked out cold at 1:03 of round one.
“I really want to thank everyone here for their support,” Shogun said after the fight. “James Te Huna is a very tough fighter, very good striker, and I knew he could come aggressive.”
The win keeps the career of the 32-year-old Brazilian alive on the back of two consecutive losses, while Te Huna is now riding a two-fight losing streak after losses to Glover Teixeira and now Rua.
