UFC Champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk Injured, Reportedly Needs Surgery

Joanna Jedrzejczyk Demolishes Jessica Andrade: ‘There is Only One' (UFC 211 Results)

Following her victory over Valerie Letourneau, UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk said she thought she broke her hand during the fight at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia. She was right.

“Probably my hand is broken again,” Jedrzejczyk said during the UFC 193 post-fight press conference. “So from here, I need to take a few more months off.”

Jedrzejczyk's manager, Tiago Okamura, verified the champ's broken hand on Sunday to MMAFighting.com, adding that she would once again need to undergo surgery.

Jedrzejczyk broke her thumb when making the first defense of her title on June 20 at UFC Fight Night 69. She defeated Jessica Penne, but suffered the injury in the process.

There was no specific timeline given for Jedrzejczyk's recovery, but she returned from the broken thumb to defend her belt against Letourneau in less than five months. So, hopefully, she won't be sidelined for long.

At least, that's what Claudia Gadelha hopes.

Gadelha is currently the No. 1 ranked contender to Jedrzejczyk's belt, but has also been sidelined with an injury that kept her from fighting in Melbourne. She's now healed up and ready to get back in the Octagon to avenge a narrow split-decision loss to Jedrzejczyk in December of 2014.
