In the battle of the Fox Sports UFC hosts Rashad Evans pounded out Chael Sonnen late in round one of their light heavyweight fight at UFC 167 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The stoppage came at 4:05 of the opening round.
With Evans possessing heavy hands, Sonnen looked to tie up his good friend against the cage. Evans was able to secure the takedown and it was the beginning of the end for Sonnen. Evans took his back and pounded away with ground and pound forcing Herb Dean to call an end to the fight.
The fight was supposed to be on for Sonnen to move up the rankings in search of his first title, but it now leaves the former champion, Rashad Evans, in a good place to get a shot at redeeming himself and he's prepared to do the hard work to get there.
“He put some combinations together pretty well,” Evans said. “Me and Chael are close; I like him a lot. It's part of sport and we will work together in three weeks.
“I'm willing to work as hard as I can to get it (title) back.”
