UFC 166 is Rumored to Be in Houston; Cain Velasquez Versus Junior Dos Santos III to Be the Main Event

COMMENTARY | A third fight between current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos is inevitable. The fans want to see the fight. The fighters want it, and now UFC president Dana White has suggested that there are plans for the bout to take place this October.

While attending the UFC 161 open workouts in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Dana White reportedly told reporters in attendance that the current plan is for the UFC to return to Houston, Texas in October for UFC 166. The penciled in headliner for that card would be a third fight between Velasquez and dos Santos.

This is a fight that needs to happen. There is no reason for the UFC to wait before putting these two heavyweights back in the cage. Velasquez is coming off of a huge title defense victory over Antonio Silva at UFC 160. Velasquez defeated Silva in the first round by TKO. Junior dos Santos also fought on the UFC 160 card. He defeated Mark Hunt by KO in third round of their bout.

Velasquez and dos Santos first fought at UFC on Fox 1 in 2011. Velasquez entered in as the UFC heavyweight champion but was knocked out by dos Santos in the first round. The second meeting between these two took place at UFC 155. In that bout Velasquez scored the unanimous decision over dos Santos to regain the heavyweight title.

Some may say that Fabricio Werdum is the guy that should get a shot at the title before dos Santos. However, in fairness to dos Santos, Velasquez only had to win one bout before he was granted a rematch with dos Santos. It is not too far of a stretch to say that dos Santos should be given the same path that was given to Velasquez.

The likely venue for UFC 166 would be Houston's Toyota Center. The Toyota Center hosted UFC 136 in 2011 and UFC 69 in 2007. While the Texas Department of Licensing does not have the UFC on their list of MMA events scheduled, the suspected date for the event is October 19.
