COMMENTARY | The Ultimate Fighting Championship's middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, will look for his 11th consecutive successful title defense when he headlines the UFC 162 fight card with undefeated Chris Weidman. The event is set for July 6, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
Here are my predictions for the entire UFC 162 fight card:
Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman
Silva (33-4-0, 20 KOs) will be in for his toughest test when he squares up against Weidman (9-0-0, 3 KOs) on Saturday. "The All-American" is an outstanding wrestler, with a solid submission game to go with it. Silva can't wrestle to save his life, and it's no secret Chael Sonnen kicked his rear twice. If the UFC's brass didn't force Sonnen to throw their UFC 117 fight (they also tried to besmirch his image with false accusations of elevated testosterone levels), and silly referee Yves Lavinge actually did his job and disqualified Anderson for the illegal knee to Sonnen's face at UFC 148, Silva's reign would have already come to an end. Weidman should dominate Silva from start to finish, and expose "The Spider" as nothing more than a mediocre mixed martial artist who continues to enjoy favorable coverage from the biased MMA media.
Psych, I was only kidding!
Given his diverse grappling skills, Weidman is a solid challenger, but Silva always seems to find a way to emerge victorious. His takedown defense is arguably the most underrated in all of MMA, and he shouldn't have any problems forcing a standup battle at UFC 162 -- which means Weidman will probably end up in the fetal position at some point in the fight.
Prediction: Silva wins via TKO.
Frankie Edgar vs. Charles Oliveira
After losing three consecutive title fights, Edgar (15-4-1, 4 KOs) will try to get back to the winning side of things when he squares up against Oliveira (16-3-0, 9 submissions) at UFC 162. Oliveira is coming off a loss to Cub Swanson, and he tends to struggle against strong guys with solid wrestling. It's the perfect matchup for Edgar at his point in his mixed martial arts career, and I expect him to make a strong statement.
Prediction: Edgar wins via TKO.
Tim Kennedy vs. Roger Gracie
The Ultimate Fighting Championship's brass certainly didn't do Gracie (6-1-0, 5 submissions) any favors by pitting him against Kennedy (15-4-0, 8 submissions) in his UFC debut. Gracie struggled the last time he faced a solid wrestler in Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, and he'll likely be in for another tough night against Kennedy. The Green Beret's submission defense is decent, he seems to be the better striker on paper, and he should be able to dictate where the fight takes place with his wrestling.
Prediction: Kennedy wins via decision.
Mark Muñoz vs. Tim Boetsch
Muñoz was manhandled by Chris Weidman during his last outing, bringing an end to his four-fight win streak. "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" seems to be in much better shape heading into UFC 162, trading his extra layers of fat for lean muscle.
Like Muñoz, Boetsch's four-fight win streak was also snapped during his last outing, losing via TKO to Constantinos Philippou.
Both men are decent wrestlers, but Muñoz (12-3-0, 6 KOs) is a lot more decorated as a grappler on paper. However, Boetsch (16-5-0, 7 KOs) has more power behind his punches, and Mark's chin has failed him a few times in the past. It should be a competitive fight, but I'm leaning towards Boetsch.
Prediction: Boetsch wins via TKO.
Cub Swanson vs. Dennis Siver
Swanson (19-5-0, 7 KOs) has been on a tear lately, racking up wins against Ross Pearson, Charles Oliveira, and Dustin Poirier. Siver (21-8-0, 9 submissions) remains undefeated in the UFC's featherweight division, and a win against Swanson would be a giant leap towards a title shot. Swanson is the favorite going into the bout, but Siver's technical striking coupled with his impressive takedown defense might prove to be too much for Cub.
Prediction: Siver wins via decision.

Edson Barboza defeats Rafaello Oliveira

Previous fight card predictions (UFC 161): 6-5
