The MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, will host UFC 161 on June 15. UFC officials announced the event, venue, and date Tuesday morning.
“Canadians love their MMA and we love bringing it to them,” said UFC president Dana White. “There are many Canadian cities on our radar and we hope to visit as many as possible. We’re excited to make Winnipeg happen and can’t wait to bring a stacked card to the MTS Centre.”
The event will feature a rematch between Brazilians Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. UFC Canadian officials confirmed the bout Tuesday morning, following an initial report of the bout's possibility by Brazilian website Tatame.com.
Nogueira and Rua first met in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix. Rua defeated Nogueira that night by unanimous decision and went on to win the tournament.
The MTS Centre is a 440,000-square-foot arena with a capacity of 15,004 for hockey games. For a center stage concert, as a UFC event would be set up as, the arena seats up to 16,345 spectators.
The MTS Centre is the home of the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. It also served as the home of the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose from 2004 to 2011.
Tickets for UFC 161 will go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 12.
