UFC 159 Victory Notched on His Belt, Michael Bisping is Opting for Surgery

Michael Bisping won his UFC 159 bout with Alan Belcher on Saturday night in New Jersey, but it looks like he’ll soon be headed into surgery, even though he escaped the fight unscathed.

Following the bout, Bisping revealed that he has a condition called stenosis that will require some minor surgery. It’s been bothering him for quite some time, but it wasn’t anything that he was going to let derail his fighting career.

“I have a condition called stenosis. I have a trapped nerve and it’s causing atrophy, which is muscle loss and weakness in my right arm and numbness,” he revealed in an interview during Fuel TV’s UFC 159 post-fight coverage.

“I’ve had that for a while, but it’s progressively getting worse and worse. I saw a surgeon about six weeks before this fight and he told me I needed surgery, but there was no way I was going to pull out.

“I’ve had this for a while. I fought Vitor, I fought Brian Stann, and I fought Chael Sonnen with this condition. I don’t like to let the UFC down. I love what I do. There was no way I was pulling out of the fight.”

Bisping defeated Belcher by technical decision after the fight was stopped due to a cut on Belcher’s eyelid. And now that the fight is out of the way, the brash Brit is opting for surgery.

“I’m going to have surgery now. The surgery is not scheduled yet, but we’ve talked about it. When I get home, we’ll talk to the doctors,” he relayed.

“It’s a minor thing. Well, it’s neck surgery, so as minor as that can be, but it’s a routine procedure.”

Bisping only expects to be out of commission for about two to three weeks. Then it’s back to work.

“I’ll be back in the gym. I want to get back in the Octagon ASAP.”
