Buzzing on Yahoo Sports:

UCLA freshman Muhammad is 20, not 19

The SportsXchange

Freshman star Shabazz Muhammad of UCLA actually is a year older than the 19 that he is listed as in the Bruins' basketball media guide, it was reported in the Los Angeles Times on Friday.

The media guide has Muhammad being born in Los Angeles on Nov. 13, 1993.

However, a copy of Shabazz Nagee Muhammad's birth certificate on file with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health shows that he was born at Long Beach Memorial Hospital on the same date one year earlier, making him 20.

When asked about the discrepancy by a Times reporter, Muhammad's father, Ron Holmes, who played basketball at USC in the 1980s but did not make it in the NBA, at first insisted his son is 19 and was born in Nevada.

"It must be a mistake," Holmes said.

A bit later, Holmes changed his story, admitting that his son is 20 and was born in Long Beach.
