The second nomination shoot of the U.S. Olympic Trials for archery is going to be held on April 23, 2012 through April 28, 2012 in Chula Vista, California. According to usaarchery.org, the top eight men and eight women archers from the second nomination shoot will compete in the final round. The final round will be held June 1, 2012 through June 3, 2012 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The top three finishers (from each gender) from the final round will determine the 2012 U.S.A. Olympic Archery Team.
Going into the second nomination shoot, the U.S.A. Olympic archery team has secured three men's individual spots, one men's team spot and one women's individual spot for the 2012 London Olympics. Competition for the men will be intense. (There are only three men's spots available and one of the spots is likely to go to archery superstar, Brady Ellison). But competition for the women will be intense. With only one U.S.A. women's spot positively secured, there is no room for error. Unless the women's team can secure two more Olympic spots, only one woman from the U.S.A. will be able to go to the 2012 Olympics. (Two more individual spots can still be secured by the U.S.A. women's team; a spot can be secured by taking first, second, or third during the third stage of the 2012 Archery World Cup that will be held in Ogden, Utah on June 18th through June 24th.)
Currently, Miranda Leek is Team U.S.A.'s top woman performer. She recently finished fourth in the 2012 Stage One Archery World Cup in Shanghai. Khatuna Lorig is another top U.S.A. woman performer. She is seeking to win her fifth Olympic Team nomination. She recently finished ninth at the 2012 Stage One Archery World Cup. Jennifer Nichols is also expected to be a factor for the U.S.A. women's archery team. While she did not make it out of the elimination rounds of the 2012 Stage One Archery World Cup, she did win the U.S. National Indoor Championships both in 2007 and 2008.
Satchel and her family have a makeshift archery range in their backyard. (The range has been approved by their neighbors. Strict safety rules are adhered to!) They love watching and participating in this beautiful sport. Thank you for reading this article. For more content from Satchel, visit www.satchelford.com.
