U.S. national team shakes up coaching staff

U.S. Soccer announced three changes to the U.S. national team's coaching staff on Sunday evening. Berti Vogts has been appointed as a special advisor through World Cup, U-20 head coach Tab Ramos has been added to the staff, and Martin Vasquez will be reassigned to other responsibilities within U.S. Soccer.

Vogts is a former Germany international who coached the team to the 1996 European championship. Klinsmann was a player on that Germany squad.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have Berti join us as an advisor," Klinsmann said in a release. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, both as a player and a coach, and he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level. He was my coach for Germany in the 1990s and we have a great relationship."

Vogts has also been the coach of Scotland and Nigeria, and is currently the head coach of Azerbaijan. The U.S. will play Nigeria and Azerbaijan in two of the three games of its send-off series leading up to the World Cup.

Vasquez has been on Klinsmann's staff since the German coach took over the U.S. national team in August 2011. He is the former head coach of Chivas USA and served as Klinsmann's assistant at Bayern Munich.

Ramos, a former U.S. international, led the U.S. U-20s through a successful qualification campaign for last summer’s U-20 World Cup in Turkey, where the team exited in the first round.
