Tyrone Spong Withdraws from WSOF 3; New Co-Main Event Announced

World Series of Fighting on Friday announced a new co-main event match-up for its June 14 fight card at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

A welterweight bout between Tyson Steele vs. Steve Carl takes over the slot after Tyrone Spong withdrew from his original co-main event match-up opposite Angel DeAnda.

Spong was allegedly having some visa issues that delayed his return to the United States from the Netherlands. The delay would not allow Spong – who only has one mixed martial arts bout on his resume – sufficient time to prepare for the bout.

Aside from the change to the co-main event, WSOF officials also made the addition of Lyle Beerbohm vs. Jacob Volkmann official for the event’s preliminary card.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to replace the original co-main event with a match-up between two of MMA’s fastest rising stars, who are both on course to become future champions,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo.

“Losing Tyrone from this card is unfortunate, but our fighters need to prepare sufficiently to compete at this level, and we are certainly not going to take any shortcuts or try to rush a match-up if one or both fighters are not ready to compete.  We will move forward and look forward to seeing Tyrone back in the World Series of Fighting cage very soon.”

Steele (10-1) enters the fight coming off of an impressive first-round TKO stoppage of Gregor Gracie at WSOF 1 last November. He is currently riding a four-fight winning streak.

Carl (19-3), who has won five consecutive fights, also most recently fought at WSOF 1, where he defeated Ramico Blackmon via first-round submission.

The WSOF 3 main event features Jon Fitch in his promotional debut rematching Josh Burkman.
