For the first time since Oct. 18, the NHL and NHLPA are going to get together for collective bargaining talks in New York City on Election Day. Boston Bruins fans, two of the team's players will be there.
Milan Lucic and Shawn Thornton are in the group of players who will be there, along with other names like Kevin Westgarth, David Backes, Johan Hedberg and Sidney Crosby. Crosby's decision to attend the meetings was last-minute, but could help.
Lucic and Thornton have two separate but equally reasonable causes for caring about the CBA talks. Just before the lockout began, the last Bruins contract extension handed out was a three-year deal to Lucic. He needs to work and make money so he can support his wife, who's pregnant with the couple's first child.
As for Thornton, who received a two-year contract extension in March, he wants to work and earn his money because he knows he can't do this job forever. He even said that a long lockout could end his career.
Also, both of these guys are known for their toughness--it might not be the best idea to cross them.
Here's hoping these talks go well today. Certainly Lucic and Thornton are hoping they do and I know I am too.
