Twins' Worley lands Opening Day start

The SportsXchange

Vance Worley's Minnesota Twins debut will come on a big stage: Opening Day.

Worley will pitch against the Tigers on Monday at Target Field. Detroit will start ace Justin Verlander.

Worley, a 25-year-old right-hander, was acquired by Minnesota from the Philadelphia Phillies in December for center fielder Ben Revere. He posted a 5.73 ERA in six starts this spring. Worley made his final Grapefruit League appearance Wednesday, limiting the Pittsburgh Pirates to two runs in five innings.

In 2011, Worley came in third in National League Rookie of the Year voting after going 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 25 games (21 starts). His stats dipped last year, when he finished 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA in 23 starts.

The other Minnesota starters are expected to be right-handers Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey, Colt De Vries and Liam Hendriks.

Left-hander Scott Diamond, who had elbow surgery in December, will start the season on the disabled list. He is aiming for a mid-April return.
