Twins' Swarzak breaks ribs while wrestling

Fan festivals aren't supposed to be dangerous events for baseball teams, but try telling that to the Minnesota Twins.

Minnesota right-hander Anthony Swarzak is out for a month after suffering broken ribs while playfully wrestling with teammates at the team's Jan. 25 gathering.

"He was out with a couple friends and the team and cracked a couple ribs fooling around," general manager Terry Ryan said, according to MLB.com. "It wasn't a fight or anything. It was just bad judgment wrestling around."

Swarzak will get a late start to spring training, as the team's pitchers and catchers are due to report Tuesday.

Asked if Swarzak would be ready for the April 1 season opener, Ryan told MLB.com, "He's going to be close. He'll be out a month and then he'll ramp it up. He'll still have an opportunity. I'm not sure if he'll be ready yet, but it'll be close."

Swarzak, 27, went 3-6 with a 5.03 ERA in 44 appearances (five starts) for the Twins last year. If healthy, he'd compete for a relief role this spring.

In three seasons with the Twins, Swarzak has a career 10-20 record with a 5.03 ERA in 83 games (28 starts).
