Pennington and Modafferi went the distance in the Las Vegas card opener, and Pennington got the judges’ nod with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Modaferri established her offense by staying active and coming forward in the first round. She stayed relentless with strikes, but Pennington countered well by landing stiff punches at the end of the round.
Pennington recovered well in the second round and landed strikes from Modafferi’s guard. Once back on the feet, Pennington landed significant punches just before the end of the round.
The third frame showed Pennington taking control of the fight, putting Modafferi on her back and working from guard and side control. After briefly returning the feet, Pennington attempted a guillotine choke, mounting Modafferi in the process. Time expired, however, and the fight went to the judges.
Pennington improves her record to 4-3, while Modafferi drops to 15-11.
