Cam Inman is reporting that Trent Baalke expects a decision on Aldon Smith before final roster cuts are do. It is not a surprise, but it is good to hear this seems to be coming to a close.
Cam Inman, 49ers beat writer for the San Jose Mercury News, is reporting that general manager Trent Baalke expects the NFL to announce any discipline for Aldon Smith before final roster cuts are due on Saturday at 1 p.m. There was no detail as to when during that time frame, but it sounds like the 49ers general manager has at least some idea of what is going on.
This is not surprising news by any stretch. While it is odd the NFL has taken this long, the biggest date has always been that Saturday of roster cuts. Given the amount of time the league has had to work on this, taking longer than the final cuts would have been ridiculous.
The number of reserve outside linebackers the 49ers keep on their roster likely does not change whenever the news comes down. Corey Lemonier, Dan Skuta, and Aaron Lynch all seem just about locked into the roster. Chase Thomas conceivably could be in the mix, but the odds seem pretty long.
Instead, it's a matter of what other position gets impacted. An Aldon Smith suspension opens the door for one more person at any number of positions. Moving Dan Skuta and/or Corey Lemonier into more of a full time role likely means special teams snaps could need to be filled. That moves someone else into more time on special teams, and it basically means there are several potential dominos to consider. Getting the Aldon Smith decision in by Saturday allows those dominos to be sorted out.
