Trejo named Pumas coach, aiming for playoffs

Jose Luis Trejo was named coach of Pumas on Wednesday, replacing Antonio Torres Servin, who was fired in the immediate aftermath of a 4-1 loss against America on Monday.

Pumas becomes Trejo’s ninth first division club in Mexico, and the coach wasted no time in stating his goal this season is to make the playoffs, despite the team having yet to win in the first eight games of the Apertura.

“We want to reach the maximum because the points are there, it is within our reach,” said Trejo in his official presentation.

Trejo’s last coaching job was with San Luis last year. He was with Puebla before that stint.

The new Pumas boss won the Clausura 2006 title with Pachuca and almost led Cruz Azul to the Copa Libertadores in 2001, but the Mexican side lost to Boca Juniors on penalties.

Trejo wasn’t the only new Liga MX coach to be announced Wednesday, with Enrique Meza taking over at Pachuca and Atlante confirming Uruguayan Ruben Israel as its manager.
