Hope is a tricky thing. Last season on The Walking Dead, we saw our ragged band of survivors make it to Terminus, where they had hoped to find refuge, only to be locked up by what appeared to be well-fed cannibals led by Gareth (Andrew J. West). In a newly released trailer for Season 5, the captors bargain for their lives by offering a bit of hope. They just have to get scientist Eugene Porter to Washington, D.C., so he can create a cure.

Gareth and a few of his man-eating clan form a tenuous bond with Rick and the other survivors and head north. There's group infighting (with Rick promising Eugene, "These people are my family. If you harm them in any way, I will kill you"), and lots and lots of zombies to kill. Check out the awesome action-packed trailer below!

Also spotted in the three-minute clip: Beth Greene (played by Emily Kinney). Rumors suggest that she survived with help from new character, Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam). The Beth you remember, however, is not the same girl who appears onscreen this time around. "I can tell you she's gotten a lot stronger. We've seen her lose her father and leave the farm, and she teamed up with Daryl and she learned some survival skills. She's lived a little now. She's not just an innocent teenager anymore," said Kinney during a panel on TWD at the San Diego Comic Con over the weekend.

In case you're not excited enough, Charlie Collier, president of AMC network, had this to say about the upcoming season: "From the opening tease in the premiere onward, season five is without question the most ambitious and satisfying season this amazing team has ever crafted."

Season 5 of The Walking Dead premieres Oct. 12.
