The Portland Trail Blazers announced their 2012-13 preseason schedule this past week, and while it wasn't the news fans have been waiting for -- that would be a coaching hire -- it did serve as a reminder that we're only about three months away from a new season.
Portland opens its preseason the same way it opens the regular season -- against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Blazers and Lakers face off on October 10 in Ontario, California, and the two teams open the regular season on October 31 at the Rose Garden.
Portland's regular-season schedule came out a couple of weeks ago.
This year's preseason is particularly interesting for Blazers fans, considering all the new, young faces we'll see in Rip City. Rookie point guard Damian Lillard was solid -- and sometimes spectacular -- during Summer League play in Las Vegas, and you can get a look at Victor Claver and Joel Freeland during Olympic men's basketball games, but it won't be until October 10 that we see how well these guys mesh with returning players like LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum.
I presume we'll hear news of a Portland coaching hire within the next week, and possibly in the next few days, considering general manager Neil Olshey has whittled the search down to two candidates: interim coach Kaleb Canales and Dallas Mavericks assistant Terry Stotts. All that's left to do now is wait for a decision.
Certainly one will be made by the time those preseason tickets go on sale, August 21. Right?
