Trading for Cubs' Matt Garza takes a leap of faith after MRI shows fluid on triceps

A trade for Chicago Cubs starter Matt Garza would be to buy "blindfolded," one National League executive said Friday morning when the pitcher was pushed off his next scheduled start following the results of an MRI on his triceps.

Until recently considered one of the more attractive starters available at the trading deadline, Garza has not pitched since Saturday. He left that game against the St. Louis Cardinals after 33 pitches because of a "cramped" triceps, then left the team to be with his wife, who is expecting a child.

The Cubs announced Friday that an MRI on the triceps showed fluid and that Garza would not pitch before Tuesday's trading deadline.

The Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles seek starting pitching.

In an effort to rebuild the club, the Cubs had made Garza and fellow starter Ryan Dempster, among others, available in trades. The Cubs reached an agreement to move Dempster to the Braves, but Dempster exercised his 10-and-5 rights in order to block it. His preference is to be traded to the Dodgers, who preferred Garza because he is under team control through 2013. Dempster can be a free agent after this season.

The Cubs and Dodgers continue to discuss Dempster.
