Woods , the FedExCup points leader coming into the week, shot a 2-under 69 that leaves him at 5 under for the tournament, in solid position to make a weekend run at the leaders, who are at 8 under. But he was suffering from a lower-back issue that he said was caused when he “slept on it funny” and had to receive treatment in the fitness trailer after his round.
Despite the back problem, Woods played bogey-free golf. He had opened his round with two consecutive bogeys, but was a bogey-free 4 under for his last 16 holes.
McIlroy, No. 3 in FedExCup points, was not as productive. He shot a 2-over 73 that includes bogeys in four of his first eight holes, including a three-hole stretch starting at the par-4 sixth.. At that point, he was 2 over for the tournament and outside the cutline.
McIlroy managed to bounce back with three birdies in his next six holes, but suffered a late bogey at the 16th and will start the weekend at even par for the tournament.
The third member of the group, Zach Johnson, also appears to have made the projected cut on the number at 1 over. Johnson, No. 4 in points, shot a 4-over 75 that included a triple bogey at the par-3 eighth.
