FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – A year ago at Plainfield, Brandt Snedeker shot a tournament-record 10-under 61 in the third round of The Barclays, a round that included 11 birdies and set a career-low for him.
Snedeker appears determined to go low again this Saturday. He’s birdied four of his first seven holes and has moved to 7 under for the tournament, just two strokes off the lead.
Nick Watney and Sergio Garcia, the 36-hole co-leaders, each birdied the opening hole and remain tied, now at 9 under. But the afternoon greens at the Bethpage State Park Black Course could become difficult.
“It’s going to get more tricky as the day goes on and the greens are going to dry out,” said Rory McIlroy after shooting a 2-under 69. “I could see this leaderboard being very, very bunched going into tomorrow.”
Kevin Stadler, has the best round going thus far. He’s 6 under for his round through 16 holes and is 7 under for the tournament.
TOUR rookie Brian Harman has moved up the leaderboard; he’s 4 under through 16 and is at 6 under.
Tiger Woods bogeyed the par-3 third and has dropped to 4 under.
Of the early finishers, Phil Mickelson shot a 4-under 67 and is now at 4 under. Tim Clark and William McGirt also shot 67 and are at 4 under. Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen shot 68 and are also at 4 under.
Charl Schwartzel as also moved into the large pack at 4 under; he’s 2 under through 13 holes.
