· Padraig Harrington closed in 29 with six birdies and three pars on the back nine Thursday at The Barclays. It is the second time in Harrington’s career that he has shot a 29 or lower on the front or back nine on the PGA TOUR. The other came on the back nine of the 2007 TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. It also ties the highest number of holes at par or better through the front or back nine in any round on TOUR in Harrington’s career. It’s also the seventh time in Harrington’s career on the TOUR that he has had at least a share of the lead at the conclusion of the first round. He did not win any of those previous six events.
· Dustin Johnson is off to a good start at The Barclays after a first-round 67. Entering Thursday, Johnson had played only one round on TOUR at 4 under or lower since April; the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic, where he won. Johnson’s streak of 22 rounds played without a round at 4 under or lower is the second longest streak in his career; he went 42 rounds in 2008, his rookie season.
· Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods both began The Barclays with first-round 68s. This is the first tournament in the last 19 months in which both Woods and Mickelson both recorded first-round scores of 3 under or better. They last did it at the Farmers Insurance Open in January 2011. This is the 20th stroke-play event that they’ve both played in since that time.
· Ernie Els was 5 under in a four-hole span from the fifth through the eighth hole in the first round of The Barclays. No player was able to play four straight holes of 5 under or better when the U.S. Open was held in Bethpage State Park in 2002 and 2009. Since 2004, Els has played four consecutive holes of 5 under or better only once. Els was 5 under in a four-hole stretch in the final round at the 2009 Northern Trust Open.
