NORTON, Mass. – PGA TOUR rookie Seung-Yul Noh has taken the lead late in Friday’s first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, carding a bogey-free 9-under 62.

The round not only is the lowest in Noh’s brief PGA TOUR career, it’s also just one shy of the course record of 61 held by Vijay Singh and Mike Weir. The 21-year-old Korean is making his 38th start on the PGA TOUR; he has three top 10s in 26 starts this year.

The 62 is also just one shy of the low score by any player this year.

“Swing, putting – everything great today,” Noh said. “So happy for today.”

Noh entered this week ranked 54th in FedExCup points but walked off the course Friday projected to second place.

One of Noh’s playing partners, Ryan Moore, also had a hot hand. Moore finished with a 7-under 64.

“It’s always nice to be playing next to another guy making putts,” Moore said of Noh. “You’re seeing them go in, kind of makes that hole a little bigger sometimes.”

Noh reeled off four consecutive birdies starting at the par-4 third and made the turn at 31, and kept the momentum going on the back nine with five more birdies, including one from 39 feet at the par-4 17th.

Updates of other players in the afternoon wave:

Rory McIlroy opened with a bogey but settled down and is 4 under through 14 holes

Jason Dufner is 3 under through 14 holes, bouncing back from his only bogey with a 30-foot birdie putt at the 14th.

Phil Mickelson is a bogey-free 3 under through 17 holes.

New England native Keegan Bradley has had a rollercoaster round, with one eagle, four birdies and six bogeys that leaves him at even par through 16 holes.
