MEDINAH, Ill. – The European Team of Ian Poulter and Justin Rose defeated the U.S. Team of Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 1 up on Saturday morning in Foursomes at the 39th Ryder Cup.

MATCH FLOW: This was an exciting match from the first tee shot when Poulter beat Waston to the punch and exhorted the crowd to cheer while he hit his drive as Watson nodded his approval. Europe won that hole but the Americans fought back with birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 to take a 1-up lead. Poulter got the match back to all square when he made a 7-footer for birdie at No. 9 and a U.S. bogey at the next hole then put Europe 1 up. Poulter and Rose gained a 2-up advantage when the Americans made another bogey at No. 12 and the match stayed that way until the 16th hole when Europe made double bogey. The U.S. had a chance to win a half-point at the 18th but Simpson couldn’t convert a 10-footer for birdie.

TIPPING POINT: Wins at Nos. 10 and 12 gave Poulter and Rose a lead they would not relinquish. But the Americans had to be credited with the "assist" since bogeys on each proved their undoing.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Americans won three holes and shot 2 over as a team. The Europeans won four holes and shot even par.

NOTES & QUOTES: The European team is now 3-1 overall with all three wins coming in Foursomes, including two this week.

"It was crucial. It was really important to come out on top of that match. We was 2 up, poor second shot from me on 15, 16, which caused us to lose a hole there. But you know what, a win’s a win." — Ian Poulter …

"I feel like that was a good point for us. I feel like we actually didn’t have our best stuff today and to win that point was massive." — Justin Rose …

"It was a special moment (on the first tee). That was pretty special yesterday, to pump them up. It’s amazing to take that first tee shot anyway, and I knew Bubba was going to do it today, so why not join him." — Ian Poulter …

“Bubba is Bubba. He was pretty special yesterday, we were talking about it, and he was going to do it again today. So why not stand there and enjoy the fun of what it was. My heart rate went from I would say 100 to 180 pretty quickly, but I mean, it was a great buzz for sure.” – Justin Rose

“We just kept missing putts. We could never get any momentum going our way. They were holing putts, they were playing great golf, and they just beat us.” – Bubba Watson

“José has put us out No. 1 for a reason to go out and get a point and put a point on the board. We got up early and then they came straight back at us with two quick holes, and then we rallied really well. It was a tough ‑‑ it was a bit of a doggy match at times, but that’s foursomes, you’ve just got to get it done?” – Ian Poulter
