MEDINAH, Ill. – The U.S. Team of Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson defeated the European Team of Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari 5 and 4 on Saturday afternoon in Four-balls at the 39th Ryder Cup.
MATCH FLOW: The Americans struggled in Foursomes Saturday morning, losing to Ian Poulter and Justin Rose 1 up, but they have sizzled in their two Four-ball matches. Neither went past the 14th hole and the U.S. Team is a collective 19 under in the 28 holes played. Saturday was total domination, starting at the third hole with the first of Simpson’s seven birdies. The Americans combined for nine birdies over the next 12 holes, four of them for winners.
TIPPING POINT: Simpson made four straight birdies starting at the eighth hole, winning two holes and halving the other two, and when he was done, the Americans were 3 up.
BY THE NUMBERS: The Americans won five holes and shot 9 under for 14 holes. Europe was 4 under but didn’t win a single hole.
NOTES & QUOTES: This point assured that the Americans will take the lead into Sunday’s Singles session for just the third time in the last 15 Ryder Cups.
“Tomorrow anything can happen, we’ve seen the Americans come back and the Europeans come back. 12 points on the board for tomorrow so no matter what the lead is or if we’re tied, there’s a lot of golf to be played.” — Bubba Watson …
“I wish I could play with him in every major championship because he keeps me calm and laughing and that’s what I need out here. I tend to take it too serious, so having him makes me laugh and play better.” — Webb Simpson …
“I think The Ryder Cup is more pressure than I’ve faced, I heard it before I got here and it’s true. You’re playing for your country and your teammates in front of the world. I think we want to win this more than a major.” — Webb Simpson …
“Frank I and I, we battled hard and we kept trying to believe in ourselves but it was one of those things, momentum wasn’t with us. Hit a great chip on 12, and if that dropped gets you back in the game and then they go birdie-birdie straight after that. You know, give credit where credit is due. They played great.” — Justin Rose …
“No one likes to lose. We just gave it our best. We had a couple of chances to get back into the match and just didn’t go our way. So sometimes just have to accept defeat, and I think we just have to go out tomorrow and try to play as we did this afternoon and just make more putts.” — Francesco Molinari
