MEDINAH, Ill. – The U.S. Team of Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar defeated the European Team of Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Lawrie 1 up on Saturday afternoon in Four-balls at the 39th Ryder Cup.

MATCH FLOW: This match was extremely close. The Americans led 2 up through five holes but lost the sixth with a bogey and the seventh to Colsaerts’ birdie that evened the match. The Americans regained the lead when Kuchar made birdie at No. 10 and the two teams proceeded to halve the next five holes. Johnson finally hit his stride late in the match and delivered the knockout punch when he drained a 15-footer for birdie at the 17th to put the Americans 1 up again, minues after his bogey on the previous hole had allowed Europe to square the match. It came down to Colsaerts on the 18th hole but he couldn’t convert from 12 feet so the Americans got the full point.

TIPPING POINT: It would have to be Johnson’s birdie at the 17th hole. The cheers that erupted after the ball dropped into the cup were nothing but ear-splitting and gave the Americans the momentum heading into the finale.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Americans won four holes and shot 5 under. Europe won two holes and shot 4 under.

NOTES & QUOTES: The victory was the second of the week for the team of Kuchar and Johnson.

"It was probably the loudest roar I’ve ever heard, especially in this situation. We were all square, and my partner, Matt, he had been carrying me all day pretty much. I made a couple good shots on the back nine, but that was definitely in that situation probably one of the best putts I’ve ever made." — Dustin Johnson …

"So proud of this guy. He struggled today and I kept telling him I’ve got faith in you, I know it’s going to turn around. This guy came through so big.  That putt on 17 and then being there on 18, that’s just awesome." — Matt Kuchar …

"Well, most of them were a little hard, so yeah, I mean, they looked good, a few horseshoed and a few could have dropped. Yes, it’s very frustrating because there was a lot of putts that looked very good and you don’t make them. So yeah, it’s kind of painful." — Nicolas Colsaerts …

"It’s all about putting. Ryder Cup always has been. All the players are top players, world class players. We can all play, it’s just a matter of who holes the putts, and today the American boys holed the putts at the right time." — Paul Lawrie
